Never Let Me Go review

Posted : 7 years ago on 10 August 2011 08:51 (A review of Never Let Me Go)

Never Let Me Go was not anything like I was expecting.. in some ways for the better and some ways for the worse..
Firstly it made me really want to read the book. So I am going to.
Secondly all I had really heard about this film was that it was a love story. In some ways, yes it was, but I think that it was more like a meditation on life, fate and human behavior. Life is short, and none of us may feel we've had enough time to love and just live. It shows us how beautiful life is, where we can love, dream, hope and desire. Although some people may find that the film is slow, it has one of those incredible endings, packed with emotional power in the last few minutes, to give you that lightheaded feeling: "I just saw an incredible film, I will never forget, and never muddle with any other".
Garfield and Knightley are both great, however Carey Mulligan is wonderful. Thoughtful, wise, modest, weary, she handles the truth, almost submissively.. as though it is fate. As an audience, we watch on, shocked and shaken up by this horrifying fate, and realise the truth about how humans can behave. You may not cry, but you will be stunned to silence.
Finally, as for cinematograph, Romanek has used colours to make the film sad and weary: pastels. The only bright colour one sees is that of the blood, making the film haunting.
Overall I consider this a film of emotional and philosophical depth, and in its quietness it demonstrates the best and the worst human qualities with a heart-rending punch.

I Am Sam (2001) review

Posted : 7 years ago on 8 August 2011 10:51 (A review of I Am Sam (2001))

A wonderful, emotional journey of a film.. the type of film that really leaves you thinking about it for hours afterwards.. the type of heart-wrenching story that had me crying (shhh) at more than one occasion.
Sean Penn's performance is so convincing, moving.. he captures the emotions, movements and relationship with his daughter so perfectly that you forget that there is absolutely nothing wrong with him in real life.
Michelle Pfeiffer really conveys her complex character well, and makes you seriously think about how the world, and you as a person would deal with somebody like Sam. Would you really make the time for him? Finally Dakota Fanning is absolutely incredible as Lucy. The emotion that she stirs within the surrounding characters, but also within the viewer really point to true talent, as she was only about 7 when it was filmed. Her on-screen relationship with Sam is so genuine, so touching, that one cannot help but feel true desperation at their separation.
The filming is very interesting, as it almost shows the viewer how it would feel to be Sam - the filming follows Penn's movements, adding emotional symbolism i.e. When Sam feels frustrated, the camera-work is agitated and jerky, using unusual angles, cuts and so on.
Overall, the film conveys the message that, although there are other things important in life, in parenting, love is definitely the factor that has to be there for anything to work. Everyone has their flaws, even intelligent people such as Pfeiffer's character, and sometimes it takes a simpler mind to see the real truth, and what is needed. Sometimes a father just needs to be with his daughter...and vice versa.
